The First Big Smile in A Long Time

As the uneasy feeling of my move is subsiding into a slow acceptance, I have found lots of fun ways to pass my time. Most of the time, because I can't seem to convince my dad to go anywhere with me, I find things to do with Lilypons and the Midge. We've taken to eating out, baking, sitting and talking, vintage shopping and eating some more. I will get large in my time here, but I'm ok with that. A couple weeks ago, I picked the girls up from school and decided to go eat at Crave, a cute, modern smallish restaurant on Cincinnati street, which is our superdupermini 6th street. As we were sitting there a two women and a man walked in. Lilypons turned to me and said "Erica that woman looks like Kathy Griffin", I turned to look and said, "oh yeah, kind of". Her eye panned over to the other woman, who she recognized as Kathy Griffin's assistant and her eyes grew to the size of plates and she said "OH MY GOD that is Kathy Griffin". The rest of dinner went like this: I told fifteen thousand stories about way more fascinating things like medicine, the sasquatch music festival, and pinstripes and they pretended to listen to my stories, but then apologized at lulls with "I'm sorry, I can't listen to your stories, Kathy Griffin is sitting 2 feet away from us". So I happily ate my spinach artichoke dip and drank my Dale Pale's Ale can-o-beer and thought about how much they love this woman who is sitting an arms reach away from me.
If you know my family, you know we may have a curse on us and we've had some majorly intense tragedies occur in our lives. I blame it on some crazy Santaria woman from Brooklyn, NY who cursed my dad's family or maybe a Curandero from San Luis Potosi, Mexico who cursed my moms family, but who knows. Anyway, after a couple of very tragic weeks, my girls were worn down. This dinner was the first time I had seen them smile that big in a long time. So as K.G. was leaving I got the cojones to ask her for a minute of her time to meet my nieces, she asked how old they were, I said "13 and 16" she said "okay, lets go". We walked back into the restaurant, down the ramp, and you would've thought that someone was handing them a million dollars the way they lit up as they watched her come towards them. Alyssa went plate size eyes again and Sarah just kept nervously laughing. Kathy was so incredibly gracious and even tried our dessert and said "Shit! That's good!". She then talked to them, told some jokes and they did their introductions. K.G. then said "Lets take a picture so you can Facebook it or Twat it or whatever it is you kids do now." So we took some pics, said goodbye and K.G. hugged Lily and the Midge and went on her way to make the city of El Paso laugh.
The girls will talk about this sweet experience forever and ever.
